About Us
Our
History
The ALSUM project was consolidated on May 6, 2011, when at the AIG offices in Miami, Gabriel Fábrega, Xavier Pazmiño, Mauricio de la Guardia, Erika Schoch, Fabricio Campos, James García, María Fernanda Alonso, David Goldbaum, Rodrigo Amengual, and Leonardo Umaña met and developed the first strategic planning exercise that allowed the Association’s bylaws to be drafted.
The Latin American Association of Marine Underwriters – ALSUM – was conceived as a non-profit foundation, capitalized by insurance and reinsurance companies with a presence in Latin America, both national and multinational capital.
We are an organization dedicated to providing information, training courses, accreditation exams, and discussion scenarios to the community of marine insurance underwriters in Latin America. Our services also extend to insurance and reinsurance brokers, adjusters, risk managers, lawyers, logistics operators, and in general to all those companies or professionals interested in the transport and cargo logistics business and its insurance.
ALSUM has the approval of several insurance company associations such as the International Union of Marine Underwriters – IUMI, con sede en Alemania; La Asociación Argentina de Compañías de Seguros – AACS, La Asociación de Aseguradoras de Chile – AACH; La Asociación de Aseguradoras Privadas de Costa Rica – AAP; La Asociación Panameña de Aseguradoras – APADEA; La Asociación Mexicana de Empresas de Seguros – AMIS; La Asociación Peruana de Empresas de Seguros – APESEG; la Federación de Aseguradores Colombianos – Fasecolda, La Federación Ecuatoriana de Empresas de Seguros – FEDESEG y La Federación Interamericana de Empresas de Seguros – FIDES.
In 2016, the Board of Directors decided to open legal operations in Colombia, under the name Fundación ALSUM Colombia, with the same Bylaws and Organs as the headquarters in Panama.
Founders
In Europe and North America, the sophistication of marine insurance has justified the creation of centenary institutions such as the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI), el American Institute of Marine Underwriters (AIMU), la Inland Marine Underwriters Association (IMUA) y el Canadian Board of Marine Underwriters (CBMU), entre otros. Sin embargo, América Latina nunca logró consolidar un escenario académico y de discusión especializada en seguro marítimo; hasta ahora.
Founding companies
ALSUM
This section is a recognition of the insurance and reinsurance companies that since 2010 had the vision to create the Latin American Association of Marine Underwriters – ALSUM, with the purpose of fostering education and professional growth for marine insurance underwriters in Latin America.
LEONARDO UMAÑA M.
