About Alsum

What is ALSUM?

ALSUM is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing information, training courses, accreditation exams, and discussion forums to the community of marine insurance underwriters in Latin America. Our services also extend to insurance and reinsurance brokers, adjusters, risk managers, lawyers, logistics operators, and all professionals interested in the cargo transportation and logistics industry and its insurance.

Mission

We work to elevate the underwriting standards of marine or cargo insurance in the region through knowledge sharing (information, discussion, and education), referencing the professional practices of the most advanced markets worldwide, while considering the realities of the Latin American environment.

Vision

We aim to establish ourselves in Latin America as the leading source of information and knowledge on marine insurance, the most prestigious entity in recommending standards, risk management practices, clauses, and regulations, and the most recognized and accepted certifier of marine insurance underwriters’ competence in the region.

Why ALSUM?

Marine insurance is often referred to as the oldest form of insurance. It is not only the oldest but also one of the most complex and globally standardized. The challenge in underwriting marine lines lies in the dynamic nature of the insured risk. Cargo moves through extensive and sophisticated supply chains; trucks travel hundreds of kilometers; vessels navigate seas and rivers; and ports handle millions of containers in fluctuating economic, social, and regulatory environments. Additionally, marine insurance is highly exposed to global service competition and technological evolution. In such a challenging context, a regional association was needed to promote world-class underwriting and risk management standards. ALSUM is a non-profit organization focused on facilitating the adoption of these standards in Latin America for cargo, hull, and marine liability insurance lines through various training programs, information platforms, technical publications, and networking opportunities.

Our History

The ALSUM project was consolidated on May 6, 2011, when Gabriel Fábrega, Xavier Pazmiño, Mauricio de la Guardia, Erika Schoch, Fabricio Campos, James García, María Fernanda Alonso, David Goldbaum, Rodrigo Amengual, and Leonardo Umaña met at AIG’s offices in Miami. They conducted the first strategic planning exercise, which led to drafting the Association’s statutes. ALSUM was conceived as a non-profit foundation, funded by insurance and reinsurance companies with a presence in Latin America, both national and multinational. Thanks to the dedication, ideas, and initial capital contributed by this group of companies, ALSUM is now a reality serving the entire community of professionals involved in the marine insurance industry in Latin America. Our gratitude to our founders is everlasting.

Founders

This section acknowledges the insurance and reinsurance companies that, since 2010, envisioned the creation of ALSUM to promote education and professional growth among marine insurance underwriters in Latin America. Thanks to the dedication, ideas, and initial capital contributed by this group of companies, ALSUM is now a reality serving the entire community of professionals involved in the marine insurance industry in Latin America. Our gratitude to our founders is everlasting.

In Europe and North America, the sophistication of marine insurance has justified the creation of century-old institutions such as the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI), the American Institute of Marine Underwriters (AIMU), the Inland Marine Underwriters Association (IMUA) and the Canadian Board of Marine Underwriters (CBMU), among others. However, Latin America never managed to consolidate a specialized academic and discussion scenario in marine insurance; until now.

This section is a recognition to the insurance and reinsurance companies that since 2010 had the vision to create the Latin American Association of Marine Underwriters – ALSUM, with the purpose of promoting the education and professional growth of marine insurance underwriters in Latin America.

Thanks to the commitment, ideas and initial capital contributed by this group of companies, Alsum is a reality at the service of the entire community of professionals involved in the marine insurance industry in Latin America.

Our gratitude to our founders will remain forever.
